This book can not exactly be classified either as a scientific essay or as popular reading. Its ambition is to offer a reading public of non specialists a wide selection of what remains of the work of three of the greatest poets of archaic Greece – that is to say Archilocus, Alcaeus and Hipponax – in a version that is “easy” and markedly up-to-date, privileging the enjoyability of the texts but without renouncing the appropriate philological rigour. The excursion through the remaining fragments of their poetry provides the opportunity to reconstruct the human characteristics of these great figures of ancient literature: three different men in different, but contiguous social contexts, three different stories with several features in common, three distinct and strong characters; all in all, three males who, each in his own way, developed a poetics centred on themes with the greatest emotional impact for the public of the times: struggle, and violence in all its forms; the irresistible power of nature; friendship and betrayal; sex and, with few frills, love.
