The image of the robot constitutes one of the most important icons of our time. By now freed from science fiction, this “almost living” synthesis of the most diverse technologies is transforming the entire sphere of human activities. We witness a formidable “silent” occupation that goes almost unnoticed, however much intuited and described by artists and writers. Robots are indeed among us, though they are not often visible. They proliferate in factories and laboratories, in high-tech products and communication means, and they “evolve” at lightening speed. There are bio-robots, animaloid robots, gel-robots, dwarf-robots. And “sociable” robots have already made an appearance. In Japan, paradise of robotics, robotized supermarkets are currently being experimented. It is a veritable industrial, technological and anthropological revolution. A metamorphosis of relationship between man and the technologies that he has created and surrounds himself with to a degree that, by comparison, the Internet is a joke. Will the twenty-first century be the time of integration between man and robot? So it would seem. And yet, there are doubts. For what purpose? And what will the psychological and ethical effects be on human relations? This volume analyses the ideological drives and the anthropological fallout of this factor of transformation of customs and social relations. The author examines the birth and evolution of the robotic myth which is definitely abandoning the rarefied regions of fantasy to incarnate itself into an enigmatic reality.
