99 The Rebirth of Splendour
2009 will be remembered as the year of the earthquake in Abruzzo, a terrible catastrophe which once again has put its population to the test, and if there is a number that represents the spirit of the city of L’Aquila, that number is 99. This is the number of the castles, the districts, the chimes of the Civic Tower and, especially, of the pipes of the famous fountain, symbol of rebirth and built after the violent seism of 1259 to celebrate the refound splendour of the reconstructed city. With the 99 Fountain-pen, Vallecchi Stile celebrates the determination of a city that has never renounced its beauty, and that in the harshest moments has always found the strength and determination to get back on its feet. "Hic manebimus optime", proclaimed a centurion who firmly opposed abandoning Rome destroyed by the Gauls, "We shall be fine here", say the inhabitants of L’Aquila, convinced that when their city is reconstructed, it will be the best place to continue living in. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the 99 Fountain-pen will be donated to the Department of Culture of the Regional Administration of Abruzzo.
Technical Features
The 99 Fountain-pen was designed in collaboration with the prestigious Florentine firm Stipula which, faithful to the logic of continuity with the past and in full respect of the tradition of the artisan workshops, has combined the age-old workmanship with modern technologies to create a product with a high content of manual skill. The philosophy of the production criteria makes the 99 Fountain-pen a precious collector’s item with a value that transcends the present. The cap is lined with metal, gold or silver, depending on the version, with a guilloche carving, while the micro-cast clip bears the wing of an eagle in glossy relief; finally, the border strip bears the engraved motto, "Hic manebimus optime". The pen barrel made of resin is carved with the digits that recall the number 99 and the year of production, 2009. The end ring bears the inscription of the Vallecchi trademark, while the edition number is carved on top of the cap.
