Italy is today engaged in missions in the framework of international coalitions which, though defined as “peace-keeping,” involve the use of weapons and have even witnessed moments of harsh combat, though Italian efforts have always privileged diplomacy and good relations with the population. In our first intervention with these characteristics, the “Restore Hope” operation, Somalia 1992, the Italian contingent performed a fundamental role, conducting a vast disarming operation and reconstructing the country’s administrative fabric. Even so, the Italian contingent found itself involved in armed conflict resulting in the loss of many lives. Divergences between the Italian and U.S. commands led our government to pull out the troops which successively became the object of newspaper polemics around presumed cases of violence towards civilians.
