Twenty-four years after the disaster, the sentence pronounced by the Court of Assizes of Rome on April 30, 2004 closed one phase of the judicial affair concerning the Ustica massacre. The acquittal by prescription of the principal defendants does not respond, however, to any of the interrogatives opened by the various inquests. The mysteries concerning the mechanics of the disaster, as well as the responsibilities, remain without solutions. This essay is founded on meticulous reconstructions, scrutiny of experts’ reports, and superimposed diagrams that sort out all of the facts available today into an extraordinary relief, so clamorous that, as sometimes happens, it was right there before everyone’s eyes but had escaped general attention. The hole, or rather, the holes, one incoming and the other outgoing, of the two missiles that hit the DC 9 are there, visible for all to see, indisputable beyond all hypotheses. This is thus the fulcrum of the investigation conducted by the author, the expert appointed by one of the parties filed as plaintiff in the court case. The puzzle of how the event unfolded is recomposed around these gashes, without breaks in continuity. The book contains more, though: the latest acquisitions on the meaning of the radar tracing acronyms, till now considered unexplainable, say that the scenario in which this occurred was one of war.
