Plain but beautiful. Zucchini squash has few calories and a yellow flower that looks like a crown: the «Quaderni del mangier sano» proclaims it the “queen of the vegetable garden”.Among the many plants that “can be eaten”, the zucchini is doubtlessly the most generous, because both its fruit and flowers are so tasty and versatile in the kitchen. A close relative of the yellow squash, the Cucurbita pepo also reached Europe from the distant Americas and was immediately praised for its numerous properties, and not only gastronomical: its considerable anti-inflammatory, diuretic and mildly laxative properties indeed make it suited to everyone’s diet, especially children, the elderly and the convalescent. With a high water content but without fat, the zucchini is therefore the ideal ally for every low-calorie diet with an eye to both taste and health. Both zucchini flowers and zucchini lend themselves to every kind of preparation and cooking method; delicate hors d’oeuvres, tasty first courses and rich second courses will always have them as protagonists, fried or braised, stuffed and even in salads. You read right! When very fresh and tender, this fantastic vegetable is also excellent raw or even in sweets where its delicate taste is accompanied by the distinct flavour of chocolate and dried fruit. Off the plate, the zucchini is an excellent base for beauty masks to soften and moisturise the skin, thus proving to be a genuine, all-around panacea! .
