Vallecchi: un sogno lungo un secolo

The book

An adventure in the Land of Snows, cloaked in ancient tales and new realities. A journey amidst mysticism and rebellion, the “message in a bottle” for a millenarian culture that risks disappearing. The Book With their notes in a backpack and video cameras instead of notebooks, two friends take off for Tibet with the intention of retracing the laps of the incredible voyage undertaken three-hundred years before by Tuscan Jesuit Ippolito Desideri. Their long-desired project will seek to document what has changed and what has instead remained unchanged in the Land of Snows. The journey begins and transforms into a thousand journeys: up and down the Himalayan mountain chain, the two friends have dangerous and astounding encounters, at times travelling the same road as Kashmiri rebels or Maoist rebels, running into solemn lamas and gluttonous female tourists. And the Tibet Effect runs wild. Like a wind sweeping far and wide, it superimposes and mixes personal memories and those of others, the fantasies of an imagined trip, and the tales of the many explorers who have seen, tried and recounted it before. The country thus emerges from a dream, and a clash ensues. The mystery and adventure of the past make way for the thousand faces of the reality of today: that of the Chinese occupation imposed at a pressing and overwhelming pace, that of unmindful tourists who continue to offer their silk shoes to statues of Buddha, and that of nomadic pilgrims who, arriving from an unknown solitude, look around perplexed and disoriented. Profound and intriguing, mystical and crude, the pages of Filmistan surpass every visual document: a striking and moving tale, an invitation to perceive and reflect.
