Piero Jahier’s début novel, Resultanze in merito alla vita e al carattere di Gino Bianchi was first published in the editions of «Quaderni della Voce» in 1915. In the form of a ministerial dossier, it narrates the sad existence of a pen-pushing clerk who winds up identifying his life with his seniority of service: his days, slavishly modelled on the bureaucratic rhythms of the office he works in, are all obsessively the same and timed by the necessities of “service”, even more than by real needs. Even the most elementary physiological compulsions are cramped within the constraints imposed by working hours and office rules: «to Gino Bianchi – writes Jahier – marital duties started to give the same impression as leafing through the office correspondence». At this rate, total alienation is right around the corner. What emerges is a goggle-eyed character who can even be considered a parody of himself, and an artful, far-sighted satire of bureaucratic alienation that renders man incapable of real life. Gino Bianchi has no psychology and is reduced to the role of administration automaton, an agent of a plot that painfully tears to pieces the myths of modernity and administrative efficiency.
