The book contains the four plays that make up the DMW theatre project on the death penalty conducted by the Pupi e Fresedde – Teatro di Rifredi di Firenze Theatre Council (2002-2004): I am the Sea, the unrelenting confrontation between prison guard Frank Houdson and chaplain Jim Gallagher that unfolds in the cold squalor of Death Row following the umpteenth execution (that of Derek Rocco Barnabei in Virginia on September 15, 2000); the monologue in verse Before Dawn, the last letter of a woman condemned to death to her infant son who will never know her; The Last Day of a Condemned Man, a theatre study from Victor Hugo’s book by the same title; The Ballad of Death, text of the video entitled Non vale la pena projected in 50 international cities, as well in the European Parliament in 2003. The volume is completed by an anthology of reflections by several of the actors and actresses who took part in the project (Massimo Bonetti, Arnoldo Foà, Remo Girone, Valeria Moriconi, Ottavia Piccolo, Amanda Sandrelli, Massimo Wertmüller), journalists and theatre critics, institutional figures.
