< One hundred and twenty-two, the synthesis of an infinite number: this is indeed the number of portrayals chosen to depict the incommensurable and highly imaginative idea of a woman’s face that becomes the Face of the Virgin Mary. The innumerable portraits of the Madonna come from a wide variety of genres and typologies in which for centuries man has identified and honoured her, projecting the essence of the Mother onto every woman. It is from this vast thematic basin that we have made our selection from the works of the greatest Italian, Flemish, German and Spanish artists in order to trace the development of the Marian image through different times and cultures. Ludovica Sebregondi has painstakingly selected these Faces. The reproductions are often as large as the original works themselves, and have permitted us to grasp every detail of the landscape and setting and even in the very expression of the chosen face. Every plate is accompanied by a meticulous, easy-reading scientific text by Ludovica Sebregondi who has also authored the extensive purposive essay. The book opens with an essay by Antonio Paolucci, former Minister of the Cultural Heritage and currently director of the Vatican Museums, which guides the reading of several of the most famous Marian portrayals. The two authors have plotted a fil rouge through the images of the Faces of Mary in their highest artistic expression.
