Knights, monks, martyrs, heretics, magicians. Inventors of the modern bank, ingenious military architects, guardians of the Holy Grail. Models of the modern secret societies, initiators of Masonic Lodges, the prototype of sects. Religious fanatics, esoteric syncretists, accomplices of Islam ... Everything and its contrary has by now been said about the Templars and, drawing up a balance, there doesn’t seem to remain more than great confusion. That’s not exactly how the story goes, though. There is no lack of documentary sources to write seriously, and it can thus prove easy to clear up the matter: all you need are information, clear ideas and competence. The result is learning to distinguish the religious-military Order of the Temple (1118-1312) from the tangle of later legends, especially those born between the eighteenth and the twentieth centuries, which have given rise to a mythical-cultural phenomenon of “Templarism”, closely tied to modern esoterism. All this is still not enough, though. On the other hand – as Franco Cardini explains in his latest essay – even myths, legends and lies, along with illusions and dreams, are subject matter of History.
