Using various arguments, ranging from history to custom, the author offers a reconstruction of reality that knocks down all the barriers of the politically correct. By using paradox in the etymological sense of challenging the cliché and conventionality, and not for the purely aesthetic sake of provoking, he elaborates an instrument of self-defence based on pure logic, against sophisms and banalities. The text abounds in citations, cross-references, and arguments, and delves into the vices of many of our intellectuals, expressed in the inimitable style of this Pontine writer: colourful, incisive and often hilarious. The piece that gives its name to the book, the hardest one, is a sort of apologia of Stalin, and something of a declaration of intent: you can’t fool me, the author seems to say to his hypothetical interlocutor, using the categories of good and bad only when it serves your purpose, and absolving yourself all the time. You are as much responsible for the gulags and death camps as for the boys who don’t wear helmets and die on their mopeds. Before calling yourself out of it all, you have to at least accept a common dialectical terrain on which to measure yourself and confront your conscience.
