The book
The book retraces the principal stages of the Italian Right, from the 1946 birth of the Movimento Sociale to the turning-point of Fiuggi in 1995 with the birth of Alleanza Nazionale, up to March of this year with the creation of a new political subject, the Popolo della Libertà, born from the merger with Forza Italia.
Numerous authoritative essayists have dealt with the Right in the past, but too often in a solely ideological vein and on the basis of prejudices or prepackaged theses. Scores of publications, especially on the early years of the MSI, were only concerned with giving a distorted image. It has been written that the MSI, as "heir of the Italian Fascist movement and of the Italian Social Republic", and even the MSI as "a danger for democracy". This image responded to certain political demands of the moment, and covered up the political role the MSI performed from the end of World War II onward.
The author, who in earlier essays distinguished himself for objectivity and rigorous respect of history, has posed himself two objectives: to recount the facts frankly, without hesitation or self-satisfaction, "rediscovering" people and events, unknown, neglected or forgotten, and to scrupulously reconstruct the principal historical phases of the Right in Italy, up until its most recent developments.
The Author
Adalberto Baldoni is a parliamentary journalist and essayist. In the 1970s, he was at the Secolo D’Italia, becoming editor-in-chief in 1981. He is an influential scholar of youth movements and Italian terrorism, specialised in investigative and historical journalism of the Italian Right. He writes for Il Borghese. His books include: Noi rivoluzionari (1986), La notte più lunga della Repubblica, winner of the Premio Vanvitelli (1989), and La Destra in Italia 1945-1969 (2000). For Vallecchi he has already published Due volte Genoa, winner of the Premio Ernest Hemingway in 2004.
