«It is right for “Il fastello della mirra” to be a posthumous book », d’Annunzio stated prophetically in a letter to Attilio Vallecchi in 1925. More than 60 years after the death of the “Vate”, an intricate spider’s web ties together past and present, biography and literature, memory and writings of one the most celebrated and controversial Italian 20th century authors. D’Annunzio’s «fastello»(sheaf), offered like «mirra» (myrrh) to the readers of his time and brought hold to our days, is presented like an anthology of excerpts taken from the poet’s best literary production, put together and ordered like an ideal biography, taken not from life but from writing, beginning with the wild childhood years in Abruzzo until the intense years at the Vittoriale. The result could only be a surprising and original “self re-reading” of his own work. The book, taken from the original proof, is accompanied by a rich critical apparatus and by the unpublished correspondance of 1926.
